The city of Austin rang in the Christmas season Sunday night, lighting the Zilker Holiday Tree.
The annual tradition dates back to 1967. The tree is made up of 3,300 lights draped from the 155-foot tall moon tower in Zilker Park.
Some say the holiday season isn't officially underway until the tree is lit.
"I loved it, I come every year because I'm from Austin,” said one spectator. “But it's awesome, I love it."
"Kind of gets me in the season, because Christmas usually starts too early and now I feel like it's the appropriate time to start Christmas," said another.
The tree will light up from 6 p.m. until midnight every night through New Year's. If that's not festive enough, The Trail of Lights takes over Zilker Park starting this weekend.
