Junior quarterback David Ash threw two touchdown passes to help lead the Texas team
over the Longhorns, 30-13, in the Orange-White Scrimmage Saturday evening at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
Ash completed 17 of 24 passes for 162 yards for the Texas team. His two touchdowns included a 38-yard pass to Mike Davis and a 24-yard completion to Kendall Sanders, both in the first half when Texas built a 24-0 lead.
Davis led the Texas team, which featured mostly the No. 1 offense and reserve defense, with a team-high 66 receiving yards on four receptions. Bryant Jackson posted a game-high six catches for 27 receiving yards.
With the Texas team leading 10-0 late in the first quarter, Sheroid Evans returned an interception 60 yards to set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Johnathan Gray, who rushed for a game-high 45 yards on six carries.
The Longhorns team, comprised mostly of the second-string offense and first-team defense, cut into the 24-0 deficit late in the second quarter.
Two long completions by senior Case McCoy helped set up a Joe Bergeron 2-yard scoring run, which sliced the margin to 24-10 with 54 seconds left in the first half.
The Longhorns team added a 25-yard field goal by Nick Jordan with 1:28 left in the third period when Connor Brewer helped engineered an 11-play, 57-yard drive.
However, on the ensuing possession, redshirt freshman Jalen Overstreet drove the Texas team 65 yards in 11 plays, with Gaston Davis plunging in for a 1-yard TD run to give the Texas squad a 30-13 lead with 10:02 left in the game.
Overstreet only completed one pass on the drive but rushed for 27 yards.
Adrian Phillips led the Texas team with a game-high seven tackles, including one for a loss. Jordan Hicks had six tackles for the Texas squad and also had an interception of Ash when he moved over to the Longhorns defense.
McCoy completed 7 of 11 passes for 80 yards for the Longhorns team. His longest play of the night was a 35-yard pass to John Harris to set up the Bergeron touchdown.
Duke Thomas, seeing his first action as a wide receiver, had three catches for 27 yards for the Longhorns team. He also returned a pair of kickoffs for 65 yards.
Mykkele Thompson also returned a kickoff 61 yards.
Nick Jordan hit both of his field goal attempts and Nick Rose was 1-for-2.
