Filmmaker Geoff Marslett felt right a home inside a Pflugerville shooting range, which helped set the scene for his new film "Loves Her Gun."
Instead rolling out a red carpet for Monday's world premiere, Marslett went one more round at the range and brought the cast back to fire practice rounds while inviting press to join in.
Marslett's indie drama follows an assault victim who moves to Austin and deals with her safety fears by learning to use a gun.
"In the film this is actually one of the locations that she begins to make guns a more commonplace part of her life, she goes shooting," said Marslett. He also remarked about training and using live rounds when making the movie.
Austin filmmaker Chris Eska's day was more traditional and just as successful. His world premiere of "The Retrieval" packed the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz for a trip back to the late 1800s.
"We relied on for guns, horses, period saddles, clothing and costumes. They really were the driving force that allowed us to make the film period accurate," said Eska.
"The Retrieval" is moral fable that follows a black bounty hunter's journey across southern states just after the end of slavery.
"So we're dealing post-Civil War, post-Emancipation Proclamation and looking at what our country was like in a time that never been seen before," said actor Tishuan Scott.
Both "Loves Her Gun" and "The Retrieval" are in contention for the Louis Black Lone Star Award which goes to a Texas-made film making its world premiere at the festival. It's one of the categories to be announced at Tuesday night's SXSW Film Awards at Paramount Theater.
