More than 2,500 unclaimed pets found a permanent home in 2012, which marked a record breaking year for the Humane Society of Williamson County.

Now, in the new year, comes a new partner. CenTex Humane Society, which is the second-chance adoption center in Killeen, has merged with Wilco’s humane society.

The two groups will work together as an organization called the Texas Humane Heroes.

Executive Director Ron Marullo says the merger will allow them to streamline operations and accomplish more.

"We're both no-kill shelters or adoption centers, and we're going to continue that no-kill mission," he said. "There's no need to maintain two administrative infrastructures--that efficiency we can then turn back into the operational side of the program and save more animals."

Animal lovers like shelter volunteer Virginia Dawson say the merger is good news.

"When you adopt from the shelter, you save two lives,” Dawson said. “You save the one that you're adopting and you open up a space for another animal."

The new center will be in Leander. The Texas Humane Heroes has their first mega adoption event planned for Saturday, Feb 2 in Killeen. Click here for more information. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
