A brief gun scare on the University of Texas campus ended with a man released from custody Friday afternoon when it was determined he was simply exercising with a training gun, not an actual weapon.
Austin police said that around 3:51 p.m., a 911 caller reported seeing someone running south on Guadalupe Street from 26th Street wearing a gas mask and carrying a rifle.
U.T. police department sent out a text alert warning of the situation around 4 p.m., and less than 10 minutes later, they sent another alert, giving the all clear.
U.T. police said they detained the man at Guadalupe and Dean Keaton. They say they let him go when they determined he was carrying a red training gun, not a real weapon, as he exercised on campus.
