The 10th-annual Pet Fest is expected to pack San Marcos' City Park with hundreds of dogs and dog lovers alike.
The event serves as an annual fundraiser for animal adoption and welfare in Central Texas. Pet Fest is Prevent a Litter (PALS) of Central Texas’ largest fundraiser.
"We have been doing this so that we can raise money so that we can fix animals like little Cheeto who was a rescue from an animal shelter,” Sharri Levine Boyett with PALS of Central Texas said. “He had heart worms and his days were numbered."
Dogs like Cheeto are the stars of Pet Fest. A special parade is held for rescued animals and opportunities are available to adopt and support rescue organizations.
The dogs even get in on the Pet Fest 5K race.
"We'll end up with about 50 dogs in the 5K and they all get along and run with their owners, it's is great to get them out there exercising," volunteer Elizabeth Wills said.
Exercising is only part of the program. Dogs will do yoga, dress in costumes and participate in competitions.
"We're raising money for such a worthy cause,” Wills said. "We need to get out there and get these animals spayed and stop animals from getting killed in the shelters."
By helping raise money for and awareness of programs that help to prevent pet overpopulation, PALS is able help pet owners spay and neuter their animals.
Pet Fest is free, but donations of pet food will be accepted.
