Austin's police dive team was still searching late Thursday evening for the body of a man presumed drowned in the Colorado River in East Austin.
Authorities were called about 6:30 p.m. to Levander Loop, beneath the Montopolis Bridge, where U.S. Highway 183 and Airport Boulevard cross the river.
A man believed to be in his late 30s or early 40s was swimming near the bridge when he began to struggle.
At least one other swimmer–an Austin elementary school teacher–tried to rescue the swimmer, but was unsuccessful.
The area beneath the Montopolis Bridge is a popular recreation area where people swim, picnic and fish.
