Freshman Parker French pitched 8.0 shutout innings as the No. 23 Texas Longhorns registered a 5-0 win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the first game of a doubleheader at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Saturday afternoon.

In the longest outing of his career, French (4-1) scattered six hits, issued one walk and hit two batters over eight scoreless frames to earn the victory. The northpaw registered a career-high with six strikeouts. French’s previous longest outing was 6.2 innings at Oklahoma on March 18.

Hoby Milner entered the contest with a runner on first and no outs in the eighth inning and induced a double play and fanned Zach Fish for the final out of the shutout.

Texas drew first blood in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Alex Silver hit a one-bouncer that eluded the glove of a lunging shortstop for a single. Jordan Etier followed with a wall-banger down the leftfield line for a double, putting runners at second and third. Kevin Lusson bounced a grounder to third base and Mark Ginther came home with the throw to retire Etier. His throw bounced away from Cowboys’ catcher Jared Womack for an error giving Texas the 1-0 lead. With runners at the corners, Jacob Felts knocked in the second run with a sacrifice bunt pushing Etier across for a 2-0 advantage.

The Longhorns’ lead ballooned to 5-0 with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Silver bounced a single through the left side of the infield. After Etier flied out for the second out of the inning, Kevin Lusson lofted a single into shallow centerfield to put runners on the corners. Jacob Felts knocked in Silver with a single to centerfield staking the Longhorns to a 3-0 lead. After Brooks Marlow was issued a four-pitch walk, Mark Payton knocked in two with a single to leftfield giving Texas a five-run lead.

Silver went 2-for-4 with two runs. Payton andFelts each logged two RBI.

Fish went 3-for-4 to lead all hitters at the plate.

Kyle Ottoson (2-5) was saddled with the loss for Oklahoma State. He allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits and three hits while striking out one over 5.2 innings. Chase Stevens closed out the game with 2.1 scoreless innings with one hit and one strikeout.

The Longhorns and Cowboys wrap up the three-game series with the second game of today’s doubleheader.
