For those who are trying to get rid of excess fat but don't want liposuction to remove it, there is new technology that allows you to freeze it.

"I am definitely not happy with the tummy area. My daughter is soon to be 2, and with diet and exercise I've been able to reach my pre-pregnancy weight, but not my pre-pregnancy tummy," patient Nina Roark said.

Roark's excited about her upcoming marriage and honeymoon cruise to the Bahamas, but something else has her less excited.

"I'm going to spend a lot of time in a bathing suit, and I have a little mom pooch going on," she said.

Many people like Roark, exercise and eat well, but can't seem to lose the belly fat, love handles, or back fat. Now, without any incisions, Cool Sculpting can accomplish that.

"You can use cold in very calibrated and refined way to affect the fat cells while leaving alone the other tissues that lie over it," Plastic Surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Rockmore said.

The treatment area is marked, and a suction-like hand piece is placed on the fatty area. The skin is sucked into the hand piece, cools the fat cells, nearly freezes them and ultimately destroys them.

"It triggers the fat cells to go into what's called apoptosis, where the fat cells release their contents and slowly dissipate into the body," Dr. Rockmore said. "The body can metabolize it."

The whole procedure takes about 55 minutes.

"It's a little discomfort, but not painful," Roark said. "At first, I felt when it was applied, the suction and coolness. Now, it's just like pins and needles."

Patients get back to work or play right after the procedure, and a reduction of 20 to 25 percent in fat can be seen within four to 12 weeks.

If you have fat in other areas of your body, such as your thighs, this may not be the best option. Thigh fat is more difficult to freeze.

Dr. Rockmore said, "In order for the process to work, the fat has to be sucked up into the machine and held between the cold panels. The fat on the outer thigh tends to be a little firmer."

The cost is $1,500 for a one-time visit and it is most effective for people who do not have generalized obesity. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
